Valley of Tears

Valley of Tears

May 3, 2017

The "Valley of Tears" is a name given to the valley where a single battalion of Israeli tanks held off a Syrian army of over 1000 tanks at the beginning of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.  The Israelis were so outnumbered because most of their troops were home with their families for the highest holy day of the year.  Moreover, the Syrians had new Russian tanks with infrared sighting capability (red and black tank below); while the Israelis were in larger but older and the less well equipped tan colored British Tiger tanks.

We saw these old tanks from the memorial site for the Valley of Tears where we looked out on the actual valley where the 3-day battle was fought.

If you look carefully at the picture of the valley below there is a bare patch of land going from lower left to upper right.  It is a minefield currently surrounded by warning signs like the one shown in the following picture.

Later in the day, we we to a place where we could stand next to the fences that separate  the Golan Heights from Syrian.

On our way to our hotel we encountered a unit of 4 modern Israeli tanks and head a group photo taken with the Israeli soldiers in front of the tanks.
