Zawayat El-Shadlia
May 2, 2017
Sufism, is a mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God.
Ahmed Yashruti, the grand sheik of the Shadlia Sufis, has started rebuilding a huge and beautiful complex in Akko (Acre), on an area of almost 5 acres. It is planned to be finished within a year, and then the grand sheikh will revisit Israel and maybe even stay in Akko for a month each year, the same as he does now in staying for a month every year in Beirut and a month in Damascus. The complex is a zawaya which is not a mosque in the accepted sense of the word, but rather a place of retreat and communion for Sufis to study, pray, eat and even stay overnight. It is the grand sheik's desire that the zawaya serve not only Sufis, but people of all faiths so that they may come together to share the love of God.
These photographs show the zawaya at its present state of construction.
